county Mr J W Smith of Glendale says Having been appointed Chairman of the subcommittee on grasses by Col I B Nail Chairman of the com mittee on Agriculture of the State of Kentucky at the Worlds Fair at St Louis in 1904 we desire to have the cooperation of the best citi zens in each county in the State to assist us in making a suitable display of all grasses clovers etc and to accomplish this end will you be so kind as to assist us in getting such specimens as grow in your county We hope you will have this circular published in your county papers so that every farmer will have an opportu nity to take part in the dis play and feel like it is part his We would like to have spec imens of all kinds of sorghum kaffir corn millo maize millet hungarian and orchard grass all kinds of clover and in fact every kind of grass that grows in your county We would also like to have about onehalf gallon of seed of every kind obtainable well cleaned and put in neat cotton bags All specimens to be gatheredafter full growth but yet green and dried in the shade and then wrapped with twine and covered with some kind of cloth the entire lengthThe smaller grasses to be from three to five inches in a novelty Your correspondent last week had the please of visiting the producing wells of thhl IstThere are at this writing twentyeight lls all connected to and pumped by a large gas engine Oil is found in a rous limestone at the base of the thovonianthe drillers call the oilproducing rock is penetrated by the drill about twenty fet when oil is found This oil is accompanied by considerable gas suffi etit in one or two instances to furnish el for the pumping engine The wells have been pumped for some eeks and about three thousand bar rel of oil are tanked on the premises io about one hundred itrl Co winch has parties now at work running the oil into tank cars in which it will be conveyed to the refineries of thc company The oil has a dark green color its specific gravity is 37 and it is consid ered by oil men to be of tine quality equal to the best found in the State The oil was found throneh the agency of Mr C P Chetiault of Frankfort who is thi Field Manager for the com atty operating at this point Mr- hienault with others had been the est of parties who to promote their tereBta on White Oak a few miles north of Irvine invited a number of iends to partake of a repast cooked over gas escaping from the ground This gas they deemed a sure indication of the presence of oil in the rocks beneath the surface of the earth Chen a Jr1neCowIa gas springJwas an indication of oil territory No other persons except those immrdiately in terested thought the wells of any value on account of shallow depth at which oil is found Still the fact remains that enough oil has been
