Howard who is now under indictment at Jackson for ma liciously wounding James Bar rett early in July He is but thirteen years of age and ap pears but about ten He has a bright honest face and is frank and outspoken He shot at James and John Bar rett because he believed they were going to attack his fath er Mack Howard and he gave the two men a hard bat tIe finally driving them into a deep ravine During the fight the lad dodged bullets from the 45 fired by James Barrett and returned the fire with a Winchester shotgun as long as himself Young How ard and his father were driv ing along the road leading from Jtckson to their home on Cane Creek Mack How ard and the Barretts had had trouble a day or two before and it is believed by many and the belief is sustained by the indictment against Howard that he was follow ing the Barretts They met near a schoolhouse in a ravine and young Dexter Howard who wasdrivingthe nag dropped the reins and opened fire on the Barretts Mack Howard is paralyzed in his lower limbs and is unable to stand He sat in his buggy and was in the act of firing when one of the Barretts shot his nag and the ball pass ing through the nags hip struck Mack Howard in the elbow disabling his rightarm He was then out of the game The boy in the meantime was on th9 ground firing at the Barretts who took refuge behind the schoolhouse As they fired young Howard dropped as if shot but aimed his Winchester again He repeated this several times until the Barretts retreated at the approach of others attracted by the shooting In the scrap a small boy who was in the schoolhouse was shot in the groin but not painfully injured JimBar rett carried a furrow in his head and Mack Howard suffered from a bad wound in the arm When Dexter was arrested and brought into the provost guard headquarters at Jack son he was cool as a man of years would have been Neither the glitter of the uniforms of soldiers nor the long guns frightened him and he told his story which was after ward shown to be partly un true with any easy matter Were you ever in any trou ble before he was asked Well I never had no one shooting at me directhe replied but I seed a power ful lot of shoots I seed fights lots of times and bul lets has come nigh nough to scorch my pat but they wasnt fired at me It was Afterward learned f Young Plants Every farmer knows that some plants grow better blind tiger near Elkatawa and it is in this place that the lad learned the lesson of fighting A Business Woman in Frank- lins Day An interesting instance of a womans business ability is given in Franklins autobio graphy In 1773 he founded a printing office in Charleston SiC under charge of one of his journeymen and was to receive onethird of the profit Franklin says He was a man of learning but ignorant in matters of account and though he sometimes made me remittances I could get no account from him nor any satisfactory state of our partnership while he lived On his decease the busi ness was continued by his widow who being born and bred in Holland where as I have been informed the knowledge of accounts makes a part of female education she not only sent me as clear a statement as she could find of the transactions past but continued to account with the greatest regularity and ex actness every quarter after ward and managed the busi ness with such success that she not only reputably brought up a family of chil renbut at the expiration of the term was able to purchase of me the printing house and estab lish her son in it I mention this affair chiefly for the sake of recommending that branch of education for our young women as likely to be of more use to them and their children in case of widowhood than either music or dancing II The tax assessors at Oys ter Bay it is crisp and bracing to walk when walking is no effort to lazily watch the coming of the first heralds of royal autumn is to store u reservea fund of health and strength for the winter that you will be sure to draw upon No one can have too much vitality to start into the winter with Then think of the beautiful pictures of beautiful autumn days that you will arry away from a September outing here to dream of in the firelight on winter evenings Why I have carried thoughts and beautiful memories away from this place in the fall that came to me long afterwards before the crackling logs of my library tine in a way that gave me pleasure not to be estimated by earthly standards of value These are things that we Americans give too little thought to Martin Luther used to say that music was of great efficacy for driving away the devil and I agree with him if it is the right kind of music It is also true that filling the mind with bright images and sunshine storing these things up in mental reservoirs Iibutthe ills humanity is heir to besides making the mind more elastic and ex pandihg the heart Enough saidmeet me here in September If I had as much poetry in my pen as Estill puts into my soul I wouldwrite a song about it all such as Mignon sung about Italy before the door cl Wilhelm Meister and say with her uTls there tis thore O my true loved one Thou must with me go Messrs T J Smith on Friday last at the announcement of the death in the early hours of the morning of Mr Frank Corzelius for mer manager of the famous Hotel Glyn don Deceased had been a great though patient uncomplaining suf ferer for several years and his final Illness and death were borne with the same fortitude that had characterized the good man throughout his affliction Mr Corzelius was born in Germany in 1829 eleven years later coming with an uncle to America where he resided in New York for a number of years In early manhood he went South iden tified himself with its people and there made his home acquiring a handsome estate by his own indomitable energy honesty and intelligence But the War of the Rebellion in which he sided ac tively with the South swept away all he bad and compelled him to begin lifes battle anew- Undismayed ho assumed charge of a popular summer resort at Tuilahoma Tenn there giving evidence of the possession of extraordinay accom plishments as a hotel proprietor at tracting to himself and his resort widespread attention from the travel Ing public and summer visitors so that his tame as a host spread abroad and he was given many offers to take charge of hotels throughout tile country In 1892 he was induced to come to Richmond and ease the new Hotel Glyndon The moiaejit of hia arrival marked new era IB this community a firstclass hotel having been a long felt want here demanded by the com mercial travelers and citizens generally Consequently under Mr Cor zelius rigid regime VerythinlC alxml the Hotel assumed a different aspect To enumerate the changes would necessitate the publication of a voluMe whose every lime WGIir of the Uri w i r work of tlis Prince of Hotel Men The task was difficult and discouraging but out of the chaos order sprang and fin ally Richmond possessed the best man aged hotel in Kentucky the reputa tion of which spread throughout the state and made the Glyndon the fa vorite resort of the traveling public Order quiet cleanliness politeness punctuality plenty were the watch words ot the house and the veteran manager instilled these ideas into all attaches bt the place until they were as well disciplined as a company of the national guard Here then we had and still have a model hoteland that is as essential to our civilization as great an ornament to our city as is our Government building for few cities possess either of those great public ne cessities Mr Corzelins leaves two sons George and James both married and a foster sister Miss Mary Mathews a lady of the rarest Christian virtues beloved all The interment took place Satur day afternoon late just as the suns last slanting rays emerged from the clouds that had obscured them all day lighting up the sad scene with a golden glory The tribute to Mr Corzelius from the pen of Judge Charles H Kreck printed by the Register is worthy of that dis tinguished jurist and worthy of the la mented dead and we would reiterate the sentiments there expressed A good man a man great in his sphere a man of secret charities an honest man the noblest work of Godis dead To his guests he has said a long last good night on earth In heaven he awaits them to say good morning Caldwdl High School Opens Monday On next Monday morning Caldwell High School will open its doors for the beginning of the fall term The same excellent faculty will be employed and everything gives promise of a most suc cessful year The teachers and pupils alike have enjoyed a glorious summer rest and all will be glad to get down to study Once more The north end of Secondstreet side of the river as the abutting property was owned by the Ford Lum ber Co Mr Richards applied to the Clark county court for the same privilege but a writ of prohibition was served on Judge Evans to prevent him from hearing the case Finally both Warner and Richards appealed the case to the Circuit Court and from thence to the Court of Appeals where it now is In order to perfect his grant Warner proceeded to condemn the right ot way through the lands of the Ford Lumber Co to the public street and Thursday Sheriff McCord sitting as judge and with services of a jury the case was triedThe jury awarded the Ford Lumber Co damages in the sum of iwentyoae thousand dollars perhaps the largest measure Of dam ageaagari fps mRny years This verdict will probably de stroy Warners chances and it is highly possible that Richards will secure the ferry as it is understood that the Ford Lumber Co is backing his suit and will allow him a passway on sufferance Winchester Democrat Special train to
