Performed Before What has been considered an Impos halrta entire possibility Mount Tacoma or Mount Rainier as it sometimes Is called lisa been scaled by two daring DettaINew Orleans Dr Betts held the theory that the theIing so the mountain climbers were compelled to cut more than 500 steps in tie IceAt one point they found avalanches had carried away the great rock above Gibraltar on which previous climbers Iwho had made a partial ascent had do Ipended in ascending one of the steepest places This mountain stands 14444 feet above the sea and Is the king of moun italns In the United States It is 30 miles south of the city of Tacoma and stands in solitary grandeur The climb really begins at Reflection lake For the first 400 feet the two men made their way over a spole of broken rock They crossed grass plots and snow banks and zigzagged over snowfields Finally they came to the gully at the head of which stands the peak Scaling this they were confront ed with an easy climb of 50 feet and then reached the summit The top of the peak is about 10 by 12 feet square formed of slabs of rocks set nearly on sideIroutes be examined with clearness from the peak and after viewing the splendid scene laid out before them the two climbers made their way back to their camp on the mountain side where they spent the nightSOn the following day they began the descent They had still 4000 feet to descend but the snow was good The feat they accomplished is regarded as one of the most difficult which has been at tempted successfully in the history of mountain climbing LOVE RECALLED BY Performed Before What has been considered an Impos- sIble feat in mountain climbing has just been performed thereby proving pts entire possibility Mount Tacoma or Mount Rainier as it sometimes is celled has been scaled by two daring mountain climber Dr W R Belts of New Orleans and H N Sarvant of New Orleans Dr Betts held the theory that the mountain could be surmounted and the proof has been gieven although in doing so the mountain climbers were corn pelled to cut more than 500 steps in the ice At one point they found avalanches had carried away the great rock above Gibraltar on which previous climbers who had made a partial ascent had de Ipended in ascending one of the steepest places This mountain stands 14444 feet above the sea and is the king of moun- taIns in the United States It is 30 miles south of the city of Tacoma and stands in solitary grandeur The climb really begins at Reflection lake For the first 400 feet the two men made their way over a spole of broken rock They crossed grass plots and snow banks and zigzagged over snowfields Finally they came to the gully at the head of which stands the peak Scaling this they were confront with an easy climb of 50 feet and en reached the summit The top of the peak Is about 10 by 12 feet square rmed of slabs of rocks set nearly on ge accessible on only one side After inspecting the different routes which had been tried In vain atttemptsireach the top and which ex amined with clearness from the peak and after viewing the splendid scene id out before them the two climbers m ade their way back to their camp on spenttheOn the following day they began the escent They had still 4000 feet to de end but the snow was good The feat ey accomplished is regarded as one of e most difficult which has been at mpted successfully In the history of m ountain climbing LOVE RECALLED BY CRISIS Premier Bnlfonr Devoted to 3Inrjr Lyttelton Pledged Life to liar Memory When Death Claim Her The romantic tale of Prime Minister Balfours love story is recalled by the surprising appointment of Alfred Lyt telton to the colonial secretaryship Thirty years ago Mr Balfour was in love with Honorable Mary Lyttelton Alfreds youngest sister She was clever cultivated and charming but delicate and died in 1875 when only 18 Arthur Balfour was inconsolable nd the story is told that he entered death chamber removed his ring and placed it on her wedding finger pledging himself forever to his dead love He has always remained a close friend of Alfred Lyttelton who several years later married Laura Tennant e eldest sister of Margot Tennant now is Mrs Herbert Asquith and the original of Bensons Dodo Laura Tennant a remarkably bril ant fascinating girl attracted all the- ntellectual men and women of smart society in her day but she too died a few years after marriage The devotion between Laura and Margot was intense and the latter was terribly stricken by the bereavement Mr ailout the Lytteltons and all the other young people who worshiped at Laura Lytt ltons shrine devoted themselves to consoling Margot for er loss and always alluded to Laura as The Soul The circle these formed became known as The Souls who by their exclusiveness as well as their Intellectual pretensions excited much envious criticism ROYAL BATTLE WITH A WHALE Honater In Captured Off etrfound land Coat After Flcht Lasting TwentyNine hones The whaling steamer Humber has arrived at St Johns N F for repairs from damages received in a royal battle oft Cape Spear N F with a monster whale asserted by the crew to have been 110 feet long The fight lasted 29 hours When the monster was harpooned it started towing the vessel at the rats of seven miles an hour though the engines were reversed full speed which under ordinary conditions would mean a retrograde movement of about eight miles This continued for hours the ship as the whale flew off in zigzag courses being almost towed under the water the sea washing the decks Several times the captain was on the point of cutting the cable but the wlndlasa held and the whale finally gave up the struggle A Thrifty Irishman Patrick Mahaney of Derby Conn has sailed for his old home in Ireland of last election day He came over from his bluegrass wigwam to stimulate the drooping spirits of his political comrades and administer the oil of con solation to the then already vanquished champions of the Citizen Ticket with whom he was formerly as sociated Frank though a Republican is possessed of a fund of genuine humor and a certain sunniness of soul that always make of him a welcome visitor The ladies of the Christian church who spread a royal repast in their handsome church edifice on elec tion day it is reported realized a snug sum from the gastronomic supplies dispensed the hungry voters The pity is that all this root of evil could not thus be turned into the channel of charity rather than be loosedupon the stream of political corruptio- nIll toot my horn and the boys will fall its tootings was mum If azain you should toot your political horn Let the toot be freedom for all Then the children of toll though sad and forlorn Will bless you and hearken your call And from every monster hares bred on the fertile fields of the fearless and invincible Shelton Roberts and supple mented by a political memory that antedates the excit ing campaigns of Old Hickory and the immortal Sage of Ashland he checked the furious assaults and ultimately swept from the field of crimson carnage the maddened hosts of Michigans doughty Scot And now as sadly sails the sable barque up the sullen waters of Salt River bearing to the castle of Portentous Silence the vanquished remnant of Clay Citys Citizen Ticket comes back in wailing accents and broken sobs the cry OhK Toddy Toddy Toddy the potent touch of thy fatal rabbits foot hath forever wrecked our fondest hopes and filled our souls with sorrow The sun still shines in the sky overhead There is still an abundance in store The citizen and Councilman of Clay City but now a Republican leader ot Lexington loomed up at the voting grounds early on the morning of last election day He came over from his bluegrass wigwam to stimulate the drooping spirits of his political comrades and administer the oil of con solation to the then already vanquished champions of the Citizen Ticket with whom he was formerly as sociated Frank though a Republican is possessed of a fund x f genuine humor and a certain sunniness of soul that always make of him a welcome visitor The ladies of the Christian church who spread a royal repast in their handsome church edifice on elec tion day it is reported realized a snug sum from the gastronomic supplies dispensed the hungry voters The pity is that all this root of evil could not thus be turned into the channel of charity rather than be loosed upon the stream of political corruption Ill toot my horn and the boys will fall into line said a Clay City political boss on election eve To the toot of that horn so potent of yore The lads in the trenches were dumb The tone of itta toolings had fooled them before Andresponse to its toolings was mum If acain you should toot your political horn Let the toot be freedom for all Thou the children of toll though sad and forlorn Will bless you and hearken your call And from every vocation from workshop to mine Gods brave sons of labor will fall into line A Republican friend of Teuton blood commenting on the result of the November election in this State delivered himself thus I shoost tole you mine frient dot vas vone awful J H Anderson Uncle Toddy was a most en thusiastic participant in the affairs of the nevertobe forgotten Third of November 1903 Equipped with a pair of monster hares bred on the fertile fields of the fearless and invincible Shelton Roberts and supplemented by a political memory that antedates the excit ing campaigns of Old Hickory and the immortal Sage of Ashland he checked the furious assaults and ultimately swept from the field of crimson carnage the maddened hosts of Michigans doughty Scot And now as sadly sails the sable barque up the sullen waters of Salt River bearing to the castle of ClayCitysand broken sobs the cry Oh Toddy Toddy Toddy the potent touch of thy fatal rabbits foot hath forever wrecked our fondest hopes and filled our souls with sorrow The sun still shines in the sky overhead There is still an abundance in store The rain still falls on the just and unjust And the world wags on as before On the Clay City municipal ballot the device of the Democratic ticket was the undisputed lord of the farmyard the game and gallant rooster of the mixed or Citi zen ticket a cable and anchor At first there was much discussion as to the name and signification of the latter emblem but a new and forceful meaning suddenly dawned upon the minds of the assembled multitude when an old colored voter who was being instructed by a citizen election worker in the proper placing of his stencil shook his head and exclaimed in unmistak able tones You is foolin wid my political concilia tions boss Does yo respects dis American citizen to prescribe his insignature to sich a ting as dat No sah Is not gwine to disgrace my ignoble ancestors in dat paragorical manner Dats nuffin but a double bit ted fish hook and Ill reform you right now dat yo neednt respects to ketch dis niggahs the More Cities and Towns Build Up and Prosper the Lower Taxes on the Whole People Will Become Editorial from Cynthlana Democrat Oct 3 1903 And the General Assembly may by general laws only authorize elites or towns of any class to provide for taxation for municipal purposes on personal property tangible and Intan gible based on Income licenses or franchises in lieu of an ad valorem tax thereon provided cities of the first class shall not be authorized to omit the Imposition of an ad valorem tax on such property of any steam railroad street railway ferry bridge gas water heating telephone tele graph electric light or electric power Is the constitutional amendment upon which the voters are asked to pass judgment at the Novpmber election and upon the adoption of which the welfare the advancement and the continued prosperity of Ken tucky are believed to depend The change is easily understood In stead of raising revenue to pay the expenses of city and town government the salaries of the mayor police firemen the maintenance of the streets public Improvements etc by assessing personal property as under the present laws the eglslaturo may authorize cities and towns to adopt a license system All property real and personal In cities and towns will continue to pay state and county taxes as usual No change whatever will he made in this respect so that people who live In the country may vote for the amendment under the full assurance that it will In no way affect their taxes except the more tho cities and towns build up and prosper the lower the taxes on the whole people will become- It Is certainly asking a small favO that voters cast tti ir ballots fo this amendment at the November election There Is little doubt of Its passage If the people do not forget or negirct to vote on the question There is no pol- Itics in it AMENDMENT EXPLAINED P N Clarke Says Great Advantages- Are to Be Derived From Its Adoption- At a meeting of the Louisville Credo it Mens Association a few nights ago Mr Peyton N Clarke Secretary of the State Committee which Is managing the campaign for the constitution amendment explained the advantages to be derived from the adoption of the amendment He said For years under our former con stitution all cities and town had the privilege of home rule and the right to tax themselves for municipal purposes without Interference from anyone It was argued by some however that this was a power no town or city should have and the wise makers of our new constitution said that it would never dothat all property should be taxed alike So the revenue law was changedBut the result has proved the fall acT of the idea and the effect has been exactly contrary to the design Under our present law the grossest Inequalities in assessments prevail and there is not a single advantage to compensate for the innovation When every persons Is his own assessor it Is not strange that there should be great Irregularities The rich man easily escapes his fair share of taxation as he covers up his stores of wealth while the poor man with his all invested in a modest home has to pay more than lila share because all he has is in sight and cannot be hid den from the assessor The proposed amendment will remedy all this to a great extent It simply authorizes the legislature by general act to permit all cities and towns to raise revenue for local pur poses bylicenses franchises etc on personal property instead of the pres ent ad valorem system Its object Is obvious Under the new laV our merchants manufacturers and financial institutions will pay li censea and avoid the necessity of fic titious returns to the assessor All personal property subject to taxation will pay Its fair share of taxes and by equalizing the burden It will sit lightly on alL Under the new law we can Invite capital and industry with assurances of welcome and our state will flour- Ish as a green bay tree The amendment Is a step forward and will place us In the line of progressive states We have bad a dozen years of the ad valorem system of taxes and they have been lean years to the Industrial development of the state Capital has shunned our shores Our mineral and timber lands lie waste Our interest rates are high and our people lack the spirit of enterprise Let us have the amendment and we will find a different state of affairs and Kentucky with all her wealth of natural resources her great rivers and network of railways will bIos som forth as the rose and wealth will 110w Into our coffers while health and happiness will be our Inheritance Hives are a
