Board of Trustees Submitted June 10 1005 Mr Chairman and members of the BoardiThe I have tile honor to rate and candid If it does not cover all points I shall cheerlully amplify it or answer such questions as may care to ask In beginning school there was drafted according to your InstructionsI a course of study similar to that followed in the best academies and cover fully all work up to the freshman YeAr in college Teachers have been employed to have charge under the direction of the Principal of certain speci fied studies are required to carry on the work in these branches are themselves held responsible for the ellicienry of their department Each boy has assigned to him a desk where he is to study when not in and fol lowing the schedule he goes from one teacher to another as his classes fall due There are thus some twenty boys sitting in each room and recitations going on constantly throughout the forenoon In the afternoon there are no classes ex cept a bnef spelling class in each room each day and the teachers go from desk to desk keeping the boys at work on their next days lessons and giving them such assistance as seems to be really necessary Once a month written tests are held on the work of that month and reports are mailed to the parents giving the results with the daily grades To as large an extent as possible writtei work is employed in the regular recitations It not only leads to accuracy but assures each pupil a chance to recite and gives the teacher clear evidence as to what preparation has been made Oral work is of course the main part of the daily recitation In verv class their is time for each boy to be heard oxI the lesson Tile afternoon session has proved more and more valuable and our purpose to continue it and to keep recitations from encroaching upon it ft is every day except once a month on the afternoon of the day of the monthly tests Twice a year two days are devoted to twohour examinations on the work of the half year The day to day work has been carried on with earnestnesb and I am glad to be able to acknowledge the fidelity and diligence of my associates The assistant teachers have been two in number since the beginning of the second year This has been in excess of the number I was required by contract to employ it being there specified that there should be one teacher to every twentyfive boys The men employed have in every case been graduates 01 the leading colleges and in their selection all possible investigation lisa been made In first taking charge ot the school I decided that one 01 two policies must be followed in the employment of assistants With the salaries the income justi fled I must either take mature men of second rate ability who were qualified for nothitig better or I must take young men of high attainments whom naturally could not expect to hold many years with the modest advances was able to make in their wages As a result of adopting this second policy I have I am confident had efficient scholarly assistants I have been paying 60 a month with board as my minimum price and SiO a month with board a- my maximum This range cannot be sately widened The whole question is of course open to debate and I do not by any means insist that my plan is the only one It seems to me best and 1 have found no serious fault in it My own thor ough acquaintance with the boys individually with their progress up to date the troubles they have which boys need urgimr which need strict handling enables me to put a new man in possession of more facts about his pupils in the first ten days of his work with them than tie could find out for himself in ten weeks without my aid As to the results we have secured by these methods I am somewhat at a loss what statement to make My candid opinion is that while not working woudeis we have accomplished a higher grade of work than is common 1 think we have carefully conserved each pupils interests There has been no neglect of any and the advancement made has been solid and thorough One fact I have noted is that a boy makes a great deal more progress with us his second year than he does his first We have by that time straightened out his deficiencies to a considerable extent and the good work done on him the thai year which perhaps made no great showing then is getting in its good effects am bv no means I do not think of saying at any time that if we can keep up to the standard of some former year we do but there are many im proyemente I mean to see from year to year A severe and certainly impartial lest of our work was made last year in the Yale and Princeton entrance exami nations The questions were sent on here allowing the boys to write their pa pers at school and then these answers were sent to the college authorities to be graded The results were not as favorable as we had hoped or as we thought we deserved As will always happen at such times some boys were unable to do themselves justice and failed in subjects we were sure they were qualified tot pass However taking altogether the work of those who were highly success ful with that of those who were not so fortunate 75 per cent of everything undertaken was passed successfully and every boy received a preliminary CErtif- icate from one college or other and some of them from bothIThe discipline of the school has been as a rule firm and uniform thought not severe We have had no outbreaking difficulty with any pupil On one occasion resort was had to the birch of honorable fame but milder measures have usually served It has been my constant effort to see to it that no offense shonld go unpunished and to have the boys learn that correction would be sure to follow every iault We Save tried faithfully to bring about better and better resuts in this phase of the school work Improvements have been effected aud others will follow yet Attendance has been good asa rule but there are afew cases where boys get excuses at home for what seem to me somewhat trivial reasons This baa not presented the terious difficulty that removing students before the end of the term has done Ten extra pupils who are at length classified with difficulty and made to study only to be withdrawn from the school are a great detriment They get nothing for themselves they have takeu time from others and the effect on boys who would otherwise remain through the term is bad There has been no very serious amount of this here however and it is I think getting less each year Advertising has been as extensive as funds would permit I circulate frcm tOO to catalogues each season run more less newspaper copy and make a careful canvass of home patrons I visit such neighboring towns as seem to promise any patronage Last summer I worked Pineville Deattyville Irvine Ovntliiana Frankiort Winchester and MU Sterling While this brought i only three boys I made acquaintances that will I am confident afford me some patronage later on The number of out of town students lisa increased and- r more and more inquiries are sent me from outside I am fairly well satisfied with this feature As to the other obligations of my contract with you regarding the cue of tl e property I have this report to make All fire insurance has been kept up in tIlt lull amount specified without intermission between policies All roofs hae been watched and repaired as needed Those of the college and dormitory liar been painted Windows and doors have been cared for the entire college build lug having been glazed and all broken glass either patched or replaced Unueed rooms have been kept locked New fences have been put up all around the lots occupied by the three residences save In front rue spouting roofs porches Setclions I have provided new as required buying the best grade of single desks A new horse shed was put up last summer The hedge has been trimmed and all weeds cut once each year The expenditures on the property for the three years amount to 127990 The financial side of the school I have tried to carry on in a business like manner All bills have been paid promptly and I think our credit is good Collections have been exceptionally good the loss through bad accounts having been very slight There are only a few bills now due and unpaid alt of which I think are eood Revenues increased the second year 1200 over the first and in the third year fSOO over the second I am pleased with this side of the school and I think that I am slowly building up a substantial and paying business In closing I wish to thank the Board for the many favors I have enjoyed at the hands of its members I have linen aided in finding and securing new students by almost every member I have had profitable and kindly advice and counsel from each And while I have not been subjected at any time to fault finding criticism I have been admonished of my mistakes in the most courteous and helpful manner It has been a great pleasure throughout the three years to work under such kind able and practical authorities Respectfully submitted JAS T BARRETT Principal Feel Impending Doom The feeling of impending doom in the minds of many
