a small station on the L A railroad about six miles east of this city saying that a man had been found dead hanging in a tree near this place Immediately on receipt of the news Coroner Big gerstaff accompanied by Mr Frank L Russell startel for the scene On reaching Moberly Station some thing of the affair was learned The body was discovered about three oclock that afternoon bya colored woman men came to the home of Mr Jackson where a more detailed account of the unfortunate man was given They reached the home ol Mr Jackson about 715 oclock and that gentleman narrated the case but was unable to indentify the man who was in a terrible state of decom positionMr said that while he and his two sons were out in the field plowing that afternoon Bessie Smith a colored woman and her child whom he had noticed picking greens in his pasture field came running to ward them She seemed very much frightened and in a breath of excitement told them there was a man up in a tree en topof the hill She pointed out the palce which was not far distant and in full view She said that when the man saw her he pulled his coat up over his head and tried to hide his face Because of the frightened condition of the negro woman Mr Jackson became r much interested in her story Thinking the man was possiblycrazy oi tip to some mischief Mr Jackson and his sons quit work and started an investigation They proceeded to the place pointed out by the colored woman About thirty feet below the tree in which the man had secreted himself they found a slouch hat theyalso got a partial view of the man up in the tree As they ap proached the tree a ghastly sight me their gaze and for the first time it dawned upon them that the man was dead Hanging by a leather strap in a small cedar almost hidden from
