first place the majority was 87 not 00 wet Secondly the city hae voted dry at least twice and wet once before this time Thirdly the vott for a wet town was not ba mapiity of the business as 75 per cent of the business men residn in the First and Second ward which together gave a dry vote of 212 and a wet vote of 126 The negro voters of whom we have 300 in the city voted 90 per cent wet The nonresident voters or in other words single men who work at the railroad shops and are here today and gone tomorrow almost all voted wet In other words over 50 per cent of the wet vote pays no property tax at all andover 25 percent no poll tax even Our police court record shows that with as he says hundreds of blind tigers there have noUieen over 10 percent as many arrests for drunkenness during the three years as there were while we had nineteen open saloons When we bad 19 open sa loons they were not regulated but a man could get liquor at any time in the night or on Sunday and they sold to minors just the same as to adults and to drunkards the same as to sober men The special tax had nothing to do with the outcome as the most of the special tax was paid by people who voted dry
