Louisville The people of Kentucky at last are to havo an opportunity to see aeroplanes in flight with real bird men soaring high in tho air and executing difficult and in leresting evolutions with no other sus taining power than tao planes and motors Thin Louisville Times has announced that great aviation meet is to be hold in Louisville on June 18 and 19 at Churchill Downs under the auspices of that paper at which some of tho worlds most noted aviators will be seen with their wonderful aircraft Most prominent among these will be Glenn H Cur liss whose daring achievements both hero and abroad have stamped him as a peerless bird man Such others as Charles F Willard Charles K Hamil ton Horace F Wild Bud Mars and C Iv Bates will also be in the contests for tho supremacy of tho air The comparatively recent advancement in the science of aviation has been such as to startle the entire world and the daily accounts of broken records show that there aro still great possibil ties for unheard of adventures by the sky pilots That records maybe broken at tho Louisville meet is extremely likely ifrom the fact that exports have declared the Churchill Downs course an ideal place for such meets and again for the reason that unusually fortunate dates havo been secured Weather reports for years past show that tim veloci ty of the wind for tile last half of June IS the slowest of any time in the year in Kentucky lOll of course this is conducive to the the easy handling of the great machines Ins expected that low rates will be secured on all railroads leading into Louisville Jor were asked to contribute groceries to one abundantly able to ray for them he would refuse The proprietors of a newspaper must pay for the free adver tising if the beneficiary does not and yet it is Saloons One reader of The Commoner has discontinued his subscription because of edi torials which have appeared discussing the question In discontinuing this former reader of The Commoner says that he is a saloon keeper that he is engaged in a legiti mate business and that he does not care to read a paper which attacks his occupation The Commoner is sorry to lose this subscriber and its editor does not know to what extent the editorials have described the business methods of the alienated reader It may eas ily be admitted that there are saloon keepers who respect the lawand honestly endeavor to conduct their business in such a way as to reduce the evils of drink tea minimum and the lost subscriber may be one of them buta business must be judged by its general character and by the conduct of the average man engaged in it not by exceptional cases The general character of the saloon is bad and it has grown worse since the application of trust methods to it The average saloon is the most disreputable place in the community it is a bureau of information on vice it is the first place one would enter to inquire for a gambling hall or for a disorderly house It is likewise the first place visited bythe officers of the law when they are looking foracriminal and the first place closed in case of riot or disturbance Those who defend the open saloon do it on the ground of that it is a necessaiy evil and that the use of liquor can be better regulated by license than by prohibition it is never defended on the ground that the saloon isa center of morals educational instuti na social asset or even an economic advantage It ought not to be neces sary to advance argument oV to adduce facts in support of the proposition that one e gag ed in the liquor business ought not to expect praisebut should be satisfied with toler ation A sidelight however is thrown on the business by the newly elected mayor of Millwaukee Millwaulcee can hardly bo called a puritanical city at least it is not fanatical on the temperance question It has not yet prosecuted the brewer who claims he has made the city famous Its mayor a socialist gives to the saloon question a prominent r place in his message He says The question of the saloon- S one that has been and is extensively agitated In our eIty the sajoon is regulated under the license system The saloon keeper who con ducts a clean and respectable place should be protected No trickery to entice him into traps should be condoned While the law prohibits the sal pf intoxicants to minors- andTFiis1aw should be enforc edj at the same time it should bdmade a misdemeanor for any one to induce a minor to obtain liquor under false pretenses Certainly the mayor is liberal enough is he not Hedoes not favor persecut ionsothe headlines declare saysOt1other saiiofliceUie to sell liqu- orcivcfwithit the permi 1M to Maintain a houitQUll kittr Ilir Wart aMt n ticentousness What does the mayor mean by this warning Have any of the saloons been maintaining houses of ill fame or abetting licentiousness If not then the mayors language is an unjust reflection on the saloons of Milwaukee If the warn ing was needed what a horrible indictment the new may or has presented If his attention is called to the matter he will doubtless assure the inquirer that he does not mean to intimate that Milwau kee is worse in this respect than other cities In other words his criticism applies to the business generally and everywhereThe rous champion of personal liberty should de vote a little of his time to the byproducts of the saloon in stead of exhausting his vuice declaiming about the inalienable right to drink It is time for the men who want to drink moderately and under reasonable conditions to separate themselves from those who find a pencuniary profit in debauching society Commoner How can the baby grow strong if the nursing mother is pale and delicate Scotts Emulsion makes the mother strong and well increases and en riches the we go to press is being largely attended In other cities and counties special inducements have been made in order to locate these enterprises but in this instance the Burley Society simply asks the co Fluno of Oak land California who came as a repre sentative of Christian Scientists and un der the auspices of the little band in this city who adhere to that faith Ho was patriarchal in appearance a man of good address and gentle manners Ho began his remarks by commenting on the name of Christian Science He thought it wonderfully appropriate and suggestive 1st Christian because it was founded on the word of God Second because it was thoroughly scientific as much so as tho science of mathematics Ho claimed that its followers accepted and faughl nothing that was not demon strable This statement was repeated at intervals many times Christain Science he claimed brought peace contentment happiness and prosperity to all who availed themselves of its teachings Its followers were glad to give it to others but it was too precious to be discussed with the profane as a past time Then followed a long rambling intermixlureof assertions and quotations from which I could glean nothing The speaker demonstrated nothing he laid down no ditinilc premises from which correct deductions could be made He denied the existanco ofsickness sorrow sin and matter except as they appeared to a disordered organism lie claimed that there could be no such thing as sin because God made everything and everything God made was good therefore it did not exist in reality lie spoke freely and frequently material things which did not exist or only in tho mind This thought was proclaimed years ago by that school of philosophers headed by Berkeley and has long since been dit carded as only the reaching out of the mind after nothingness The speaker declared his belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ and followed this Immediately a statement imply ing his belief in the impersonal and not the personal Christ Ho declared that it was absurd to take drugs for the relief of sickness because they the drugs could not diagnose any sickness also that it was absurd to take food to sustain life because in nearly ovary instance the lifo was cooked out of the food before it was eaten There would come a time when life could be sustained by some without food but for the present to try it would be like casting ones self from the pinnacle of the temple tempting God lIe declared that satan existed In the great nowhere and that his ministering angels were deceit hypocricy pride vanity and the lust of the flesh This latter thought is a good one I have never listened more attentively to a speaker in my life because I hoped to find a clue to the secr t enjoyed by those who accept and profess to understand this faith but it was a failure Tho speaker left the impression on the writer that the criticism of the late Mark Twain giving his reason for the progress made by Christian Science was true Thinking that possibly I did not correctly Appreciate the speaker I inquired ofI one whom I have long regarded as one of the best and irestjudges in our city if he understood the speech Hereplied No andnoitherdid the speaker Finally I desire to say that thestrong estcmpression left on me was that theI speaker was an old man bordering on a second childhood who had either pre- Pared or had prepared there were fifteen thousand there The Idea man said that the merchants told him that people drove twenty miles to the picnic because they were toW that it was to be a regular old fashioJled picnic where everything was free and no strings to it They came old and young everybody forgot their wojk and business and worry for theday and everybody seemed bent on getting all the real enjoyment possible out of the day and there was nothing left undone on the part of the business men They had gone into the deal with a purpose and had arranged their sys tem to that purpose Everyman was placed on some committee and every man worked with all his vim to see that his part did not lag There was no opportunity for any one to kickall were too busy Then when the day camewhich by the way was in Augustfor the picnic everybody was ready and things went off without a hitch There were games for the youngsters five bands were on the grounds good speakers were procured to add iess the people there was dancing for the young peopleand a fCllowsIgotall in all it was according to the stories told the idea man by the business men of Em lenton a howling success in eyery way People remarked that it did them more good than any gathering they had attended in many a year The people went home happy They went home to think of the jolly good time they had that days and there was one thing that they seemed to ap predate and that was the fact that it hall not cost them anything The business vnen in arranging for the holiday dicided that there should be no charge of any kind for any thing The dinner and all entertainment was free and the picnic was held in a beautiful grove clear away from town so the people were not asked to buy goods to pay the merchants for their trouble They had met here for a good sociable time to get better acquainted with one another and to learn that time old senti ments that we sometimestalk about existing in the hearts of the pioneer people werQ not dead Now as to whether it paid these business men to put on such an entertainment itio sufficient to state that they met and unanimously voted to make the picnic a permanent thing They will lave another picnic and the people will be talking about it for months before it happens and for months after and certainly that is one of the important things for the business man to consider when boost ing his business or his town Many and many a person no doubt will go to the little city of Emlenton to buy goods who would porhaps not have done so had not their thought been directed to the town by the picnic booster spirit of these few men Just take another look at this photograph and see if you can see any reason why these merchants here were Free Sample Frys Is Something can 4Ind must be done for
