IH ADVANCE WEDNESDAY JUNE 8 1910 Democratic Ticket Fon CONGRESS lION HARVEY HELM Of Lincoln County IT seem to us that those who are making such a vigorous fight oa that great enemy of tho human race tuberculosis are overlooking ono of tho most important if not the most important features in connection with the prevention and cure of the disease Thousands of dol lars are being spent annually in experiments trying to find something that will prevent and cure this awful disease Many learned men and women are devoting their lives to this cause and yet it seems none of them have as yet come to the root of the trouble In our opin ion and wo are strengthened in this belief by opinions expressed by eminent physicians improper breathing is the cause of more tuberculosis than all other causes combined The lungs wro given Vus by a wise Creator to use arid it is important that every cell should be ex ercised with every breath yet the men of our country aro breathing about half of what they should and tho women nbout one third This is a very important matter and those who are fighting to strengthen our race would do well to see to it that proper breathing be taught the children throughout tho length and breadth of this land Make it compulsory that breathing exercises be made a part of the training for our children and in this way so strengthen their lungs while they are yet young that as they grow older they will know how to care for them and thereby ward off this terrible diseaseITHE last issue of the Bcrea Citizen contained a card from our friend Stan ley Frost Turri at Amusing Him A negro attached to an African hunt lug party met with a curious adven ture says an English paper Wander lug one day from camp he surprised two lion cubs at play and thoughtless ly commenced to amuse them lie was only too successful The big cubs gamboled fearlessly about him and to his dismay refused to desist when he Wished to leave them Realizing the danger to which he would be exposed should tho mother appear he began to run but the cubs refused to be shaken off and in their play scratched his legs In fearful fashion That the creatures were thoroughly enjoying themselves was evident from their manifestations of delight and before long their unusual cries brought a lioness leaping to the spot Trembling In every limb the negro faced the growling animal while the cubs continued to Jump up at him eager for further caresses The en raged lioness moved round uneasily in a circle man and beast keeping their eyes steadily on each other Sev eral times the lioness crouched to spring but the man from fear never shifted his gaze At length after what seemed an age when the negro was ready to drop from exhaustion the animal suddenly called her cubs away and disappeared Into the surrounding scrub An Artists Struggles Professor von Ilerkouier the famous painter had such a struggle to gaul arriving in his early days that had It not been for his Dugglns some of the bands wesee on It may bo rifts In the clouds revealing the body of the plan et Little lines crisscross these bands Photographs of Jupiter taken at Flag stair observatory seem to indicate that these lines too are the upper clouds of Jupiter But whenever we see a planet wo see It badly Even Mars the most clearly revealed of them all Is con stantly obscured by a retracting haze so that even of the famous canals though nearly in number only a fw arc perceptible at a time and an unskilled observer would probably not make them out at all Sandstorms sometimes snowstorms sweep the sur face of the planet and because the Winds of Mars are very gentle and slow moving these occurrences take a long time to pass byLondon Family herald HE AMUSED THE CUBS Then the Young Lions Took a Turn at Amusing Him A negro attached to an African hunt Ing party met with a curious advcn ture says an English paper Wander ing one day from camp be surprised two lion cubs at play and thoughtless ly commenced to amuse them He was only too successful The big cubs gamboled fearlessly about him and to his dismay refused to desist when he wished to leave them Realizing tho danger to which he would be exposed should tho mother appear he began to nm but the cubs refused to be shaken off and in their play scratched his legs In fearful the creatures were thoroughly enjoying themselves was evident from their manifestations of delight and before long their unusual cries brought a lioness leaping to the spot Trembling In every limb the negro faced the growling animal while the cubs continued to jump up at him eager for further caresses The enraged lioness moved round uneasily In a circle man and beast keeping their eyes steadily on each other Sev eral times the lioness crouched to spring but the man from fear never shifted his gaze At length after what seemed an age when the negro was ready to drop from exhaustion the animal suddenly called her cubs away and disappeared Into the surrounding scrub An Artists Struggles Professor yon Herkouier the famous painter had such a struggle to gain IfTIvIng in his early days that had It not been for his Inexhaustible stock of paUenco end music of every instrument now used to per fection get into n quart bottle with out equivocation and while there sing several songs besides doing other things only a little less marvelous more marvelous that the theater should have been packed with spec tators including many of the nobility and the Dukoof Cumberland of Cullo den fame Tho conjurer did not appear but one of the theater officials did and in formed the house that nil money would bo returned at the doors Cum berland was tho first that flew in a rage a contemporary account tells us and called to pull down the house Ho drew his sword and was in such a rage that somebody slipped in behind him and pulled the sword out of his band which was as much as to say Fools should not have chopping sticks This sword of his has never been heard of nor the person who took It Thirty guineas of reward are offered for it London Chronicle Curious Street Names The list of curious street names is inexhaustible Bermondsey possesses a Pickle Herring street Near Grays inn there is to be found a Cold Bath square Most of the Nightingale lanes and Love lanes are hidden ironically enough in the slums of the east cud But for really bizarre street names one should go to Brussels The Short Street of the Long Chariot the Street of the Red Haired Woman and the Street of Sorrows are remarkable enough to catch the least observant eye The Street of the One Ierson is as one might guess considerably nar rower than Whitehall But the cream of Brussels street names surely belongs to the Street of the Uncracked Silver Cocoanut This in the original appears as one ponderous thirtysix letter wordLondon Chronicle He Knew How It Was James mother is one of those un fortunate individuals who pick up unconsciously every error in speech In order to sell a little more cream or butter is Hot a good plan for any animal which Is being raised for profitSThere seems to be an extraordinary demoralization In the spud market duo to last years unusually heavy crop and a holding of a largo per cent of It close to the time when new potatoes will be on the market Not withstanding the slump in prices no good reason will exist for reducing the acreage of the tubers materially as enough will be led to do this to mate rially raise tho price for those who stay In the business on the same scale Before the present years growth of tho shade trees gets well started It will be a good idea to Inspect those bordering tho public highway and to pruno the limbs hanging down over walks and driveways It Is not cal culated to Induce kindly feelings in tho lady next door if she has the tenth ers on her best hat knocked loose by one of these overhanging limbs nor to promote the religious Instincts of the fellow who has his eye punched while riding by on a load of hay or double box wagon There Is probably no type of farm Ing or ranching that Is more remu nerative or accompanied with less risk one year with another than the growing of alfalfa Especially is this true In and near sections whose area is largely devoted to some other pur poseas for Instance fruit raising for uniformly high prices can be secured for tho hay owing to tho limited sup ply raised Here is a fine opportunity for many an energetic fellow who likes farming but doesnt like to put up with the exacting care which the raising of fruit entails Where possible a first hand inspec tlpn of the nursery stock which one buys is advisable for in such case one not only has opportunity to size up the general appearance of the stock but to examine the type of roots which the stuff has which is of more importance than any other factor And this holds whether the order be of small fruit bushes vines fruit trees or ever greens The root of a plant or tree is the capital with which it starts in the business of growing and If this capi tal be lacking Its operations arc bound to be limited and unsatisfactory While conditions vary greatly In different sections of tho country affect Ing the care which ought to be given to newly set fruit trees it Is the ver diet of the best experience that they should be given most thorough cultl ration with no crop grown close enough to appropriate the moisture which trie trees need for their best growth Too often mistakes are made along both these lines with the result that the young trees instead of making a healthy growth become stunted and never develop as they might have done That cultivation should be given which will insure loose and mellow soil about the trees and under no circumstances should It be allowed to become hard and baked The University of Wisconsin has of late Inaugurated n custom which might well be followed by other institutions a part or the whole of the energies of which as institutions are devoted
