W. Tho Cincinnati 2?tw$ throws cold water on the proposed educational convention as follows: "A call has been issued for a conference or conven tlon of tho friends of education in Kentucky, to bo held at Frankfort, April 5. The purposes ot the convention are to 'assist in creating a public sentiment that will securo what wo waut.' And right thero arises the difficulty in tho way of this confer ence. What do 'wo want?' There can bo no doubt that Kentucky needs an educational rovival, just as Ohio, Indiana and every other stato needs it. In fact wo notice among the hun dred signers to this call, tho names of quito a number of prominent Ken tucky politicians, who aro total stran gers to alt the requirements of correct writing and speaking. But this ia no objection to tho proposed conference; it is rather an argument in its favor. If 'what wo want' is to cultivate some acquaintance with the laws of the mother tongue and Induce tho children to grapplo these laws with hooks of steel, then by all means should the peoplo 'turn out in force and make a demonstration more imposing than any political convention ever held in the state.' But is that 'what wo want?' There's the rub. Tho call is signed by somo of the shrendett political tricksters in the state, and its prime mover, Judge Bcckner, is not above the mean suspicion of a willingness to ride an educational hobby into any good grazing ground that may lie between the mouth of tho Big Sandy and tho head of Reel Foot Lnke. Worse thad that, thero are those mean enough to suspect him of pulling his hobby up to the political stile and taking on Chief Justice Hargis, Senator Williams, ex Representative Knott aud many others who havo a hankering after tho flesh pots of office That theso sucpicions aro utterly without foundation will not make their effect less hurtful to the proposed convention. A postponement until after the gubernatorial, senatorial and legisla- tive election might stiffen the backbone of public confidence. Hardly had it been placed iu its new quarters before tho leaves began to stand up in all directions, liko the hair on tho tail of an angry cat and soon the whole plant was in a quiver. At tho earao timo it gave out an odor most pungent and sickening, resembling the odor given of! by rattle snakes and other kinds of snakes when teased. This odor so filled tho houso that it was necessary to open tho doors and windows, It was fully an hour before the plant calmned down and folded its leaves in ?ttr? ) peace .
