By a law of the State all raloooa are cloccd and by common consent all the plscts o'f business save tho post office and drug stores were alto closed so that the drunkenness ro common In a Kentucky election was prevented, and no riot or disorder occurred, during the whole day. I saw but one blow inflicted and that fell upon the crown of an impudent negro, who in Kentucky for the same offense, would have been riddled with balls. This also I aay, that if in Kentucky the negroes had hustled the whites from the polls as I siw them do at tho beginning of tho voting there would have been a general row. The only influence I raw brought to bear to induce the blacks to voto the democrat Neither money, lo ticket was persuasion. or weapons or threats were used eo far aa I was abte to observe or gather. I hoard one active politician say that ho could roto every darkey in the precinct with a hundred dollars but had no money to throw away. Tho hotter class of darkeys all vote the democratic ticket, while the raff pcafl voted as they pleased, generally for tho radicate. The people here do not caro eo much for national politico en with you, but if they oankcep their State affairs in the right kind of hands aro content to let tho general govcrumcut, work its own awect will. Thoy only desire to bo "let aloue" by the North lo work out their own dedliny. Of course thcro aro ambitious men here as everywhere and tho people generally manage to send men of tho right otripe to Congress, not that they expect to be benefitted by any national legislation, but only as a matter of Statu pride. Their interests have been ho long ignored that they hope for nothing in that direction The planters could easily control the votes ol tho negroes by threats of driving them from the lands they till under them, aa the northern manufacturers do with their aperatlvea, but only in important State contests do they rwort to suuii means. All tho balderdash orio rendu in northern papers about bulldozing and terrorism hero is so much initerablo buncombo thrust down the cupioioiis gullets of gullible Yanks. According to my judgment if Ketitiiuk-ian- s had such a vibis of ignorant, impudent, vioious wretches to contend with ut tho ballot box there would bo more bullets than ballots in the esse. The worst wish could make about their any Yankee-hitte- r northern villlfiers would bo that a few scented tulips millions of tlieso aw-e- t would emigrate to tho fields of Yankccdoiu There they might hug them to their benev olent bosoms and elevate or depress them to their own leyol, which ever tho caie might require. We hope that Mississippi has gone for Cleveland but can't tell until the boxes are opened. If fate has at last ordained success to democratic principles we shall rejoice with fear and trembling lest the cheese be again stolen from our mouth. If radicalism agiin triumphs, Mississippi can stand that as she has stood a thousand times worse things in the dark past. Se.viuu. Price of potatoes are generally enough higher in the spring than in the fall to pay well foi keeping them over. One year wc remember, when they could b bought in any quantity in November at Gity cents a bushel; a good article brought two dollars a bushel the following spring. Potatoes keep best away from air, light and excessive moisture, and at a low temperature, a few degrees above freezing. Where there is u good cellar room for storing the crop, nothing further is wanted, but if this Is lacking then burying must bs restored to. Aside Irom the labor, there are fw die9dvaDtgs in burying potatoes. They should be stored upon the surface of the ground in some dry place in limps of thirty to otto hundred bushels each. A light covering of straw is thrown over the hesp, and on this a heavy covering of earth sufficient to keep out severe frost and wttcr. A coat eighteen inches deep might answer, but one cr two feet would bo infer. Where the soil is perfectly drained there may ba an excavation several feet deep mide, in which to start the pilo. Sonio in such places even advocate in making pits large enough ro that tho storage will all take place beneath the surface. Where it isdcsirablo to get at potatoes in the winter, cheap vaults or cellars for storing them aro sometimes made in hilleidos to hold from 500 to 1,500 bushels. In cellars it answers well to keep the crop by barreling, but this is not so economical as n place to store in bulk. Winter Potatoes. avoid the crowded ball rooms, Louis Napo leon, with the Duke of Li went into the Elyeee Gardens, where he suddenly came upon a radiant, blushing girl. Jolyu, in the Hatchet. On Picket. To tho true soldier picket duty was a positivo ploisure. The knowledge that in his hands rested tho safety of tho army made the most thoughtless grave. Slowly pacing his beit the sentry listened to overy sound, watched every movement. A scampering quarrel among tho dead leaves, a twittering bird in the branches oyer his head, the robin hopping over the grass all were noticed in silence; but let a movement occur in the opposing line and every musket was instantly cocked, whilo warn. Ing words ran rapidly along the chain of posts. A chntice shot by some excited gaining an angry rssponse, the wholo line would soon bj ablazs. Bullets whistled through the trees as the matks'.ry grew in strength and consider sble auiunltion would be wasted before orJsri mini to stop firo-in- g When the advanca begin, and tho picket: received instructions to move forward and engage the enemy, every man to the line and work opened merrily. Night duly was naturally the most trying, for then there was the danger of surprise; but when the soldier was relieyed he rolled himself in his blanket and slept calmly, knowing that his comrades were watching over him in their turn. p sen-tin- rnoi'KHsioiuii AjrToitiviav ALBX.
