The year opens with several important political events on thu chess hoard. Now York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Hampshire, Kansas and several other States nre to elect U. S. Senators and great manifested in the result. The legislatures in tho States named meet from tho 7th to the liith and upon them the important duty will devolve. A democrat will succeed Mr. Uvarts from New York, but who will bo the lucky man is n matter of much speculation. In Pennsylvania an effort is being made to retire Don Cameron and the result is watched with much interest, though it is thought that the Senator is too strong financially, if in no other way, to fail of In Kansas Ingalls has his coat off and is working liko a Turk to keep tho farmers' alliance from putting him in tho soup. There is a majority of them and with the democrats they can easily elect a better man, but tho irrides-cestatesman has money and knows how to use it to the best advantage with the purchasable element, which unfortunately abounds in the Kansas legislature. Ingalls has bought his way and knows just how to touch the members who have an eye open' to the main chance. There ought not to be any doubt of democrats being elected in Illinois and Ne,w Hampshire, but tho republicans have the political machinery and seem determined to thwart the will of tho people. Illinois js, however, reasonably sure to elect Gen. Palmer, but Little Billy Chandler, whoso auricular is still out of shape from the pull that Senator Blackburn gave it, is managing New Hampshire and he is an adept a, stealing anything from the presidency down. In the other States tho majorities are more than amply sufficient to leave no doubt of the election of democrats to succeed republicans, and as the best men are spoken of the result in any state of case will be satisfactory. Michigan and AVihconsin, heretofore republican strongholds, will return democrats and that of itself would be glory enough for one year, but from the fact that the doinc-crarose up in November and claimed and captured nearly the whole earth. Nothing short of a democratic president and a democratic Senate, with their overwhelming democratic House will now satisfy the people, who have determined that republican men and nielli-od- s shall no longer mennce the welfare of their glorious country. The handwriting is on the wall. The republican party must go. nt bo-fo- re MoRATllAiTKAndoes notbeliovo that newspaper copy production shall be recognized as n "profession." He does not wish to be charged with lacking but there is something incom-plet- e in tho word profession. It seems imply suggestion, not accomplishto ment, an advertisement of intention, a proclamation that may not be and probably will not be rounded up with performance. A professor of reform may be something very diflerent from a reformer. A professor of politics may be quite inadequate, for tho practical politician in all probability professes very little. Within a word, says he, wo prefer to speak of our occupation and to regard an occupation as something worthier than a profession. For once tho Field Marshal seems to ho right; at any rate, that is the way most sensible men look at it. n, Tiik V. S. troops have at last gotten a fight out of the poor Indians. According to the dispatches, Big Foot advanced with a white flag and proposed to surrender. His band of 150 came out of their tents and sat on the ground in a circle, surrounded by U.oOO troops. With nil this odds neainst them, the improbable statement is made that the Indians suddenly threw their bauds to the ground and began firing. Then, according to tho ofllcial report, the troops turned loose aud in tho light which followed showed no quarter to men, women nor children, all being either killed or wounded. The whole thing reads slaughter and cowardlike a ly massacre.
