Tho fleeco of a 100 pound sheep mnkes up 10 per cent or moro of tho animal's weight, and it consists of a far greater proportion of tho most exneting elements of nutrition than tho flesh of tho Bheep does. Flesh has 75 per cont of water in it; wool has only 15 per cent. The flesh has in its dry matter tho following elements, and wool has tho quantities set opposito to them. Thus tho composicent; tion of flesh is: Carbon, 51.83 hydrogeu, 7.57; nitrogen, 15.01; oxygen, 21.37; ashes, 4.23. Wool Carbon, 40.03 per cent; hydrogen, 0.03; nitrogen, 17.31; oxygen, 22.11; ashes, 2.0; sulphur, 2.0. Taking into account that tho wool harns much water in it as the dily flesh, it is easily Been that it rcqnlrce fivo times as much of tho elements of nutrition for each pound weight ns the flesh, and thus, if tho fleeco of n merino weighs 15 pounds, nnd tho carcass, after shearing, weighs 75 pounds, equal quantities of food nro required for tho production of each. This is perhaps never thought of by any feeder of tho flock, for so far it seems to havo been completely ignored by nil writers upon sheep husbandry, nnd yet tho importance of it is paramount. Tho common ignorance of theso urgent demaudsof tho fleeco for specinl nutriments is doubtless why tho Ehecp suffers so much from tho oxhaus-tiv- o requirements of tho wool. As tho fleeco must bo supplied nftcr tho animal itself, tho wool suffers while tho sheep escapes, nt least to domo extent, nnd as tho wool cannot exist without its necessary accompaniment of the yolk ami greaso, which naturally protect it from injury by tho rnius, heat 01 cold, this is to bo considered as calling for requisito nutriment as well as the actual body of tho animal. It is worthy of note, too, that ns wool contains con siderable sulphur this is also to bo provided in tho food. Every time tho sheep is underfed 01 suffers from any other cause, it appeart in tho wool, tho fiber of which ehows a thin plnco in it, and each of theso weak spots represents a fault in feeding 01 other part of tho management. This weakness in tho fiber is ruinous to the wool, as it causes it to break in tho carding or combing, nnd thus becomo toe short for tho spinner aud fit only fox felting. This defect ia known by th woolen manufacturers and buyers ai "break" and makes it unsalable Consequently tho matter of feeding nnd the regularity of it nro upecial points to l regarded by tho shepherd. Yet it must not bo supposed that tho wool only suffers. Tho sheep must necessarily Buffer, for tho damngo to tho wool is only one of tho visible signs of injury to tho whole animal. In estimating tho amount of food necessary for a sheep, all theso jwints nrotc bo taken into account, nnd tho gro&t weight of tho nuimal is to bo increased for estimating tho nllownnco of food by tho projortion to bo ndded on account of tho extra dry substauco of tho fleeco. To bo on tho safe side, it will bo quite reasonable to add to tho livo weight ol tho sheep fully 100 per cent that ii, tc doublo tho weight and cstiinnto the ration accordingly. Tho normal allowance of 3 per cent of dry matter per IOC pounds of carcass may thus bo doubled without nny fear of overfeeding. S. Henry in American Agriculturist.
