LEXINQTOS has been going from bad to worso for a long time, owing to tho failure of 1U courts to punish lawbreakers. Tho climax of rulllanlsra, emboldened by an apparent Immunity from punishment, was reached when a splendid young man was shot and killed for no cause whatover, except that ho expostulated when a dirty whelp purposcdly ran against him, and ho murder was tho straw that Anally broke tho cam-el- 's back and awakened tho people to tho realization of tho enormity of tho numberless crimes that had pono of justice. The victim of tho assassination was Jacob S. Keller, cashier of tho freight department of tho Q. & C. railroad, and a gentleman of tho highest standing, who never sought a difficulty. His murderer Is King McNamara, a young shoulder-hitte- r at elections, who has been In numerous troubles and gone S:ott free of them. Last week ho ran against Mr. Keller on tho street for the purpose doubtless of raising a row, and when ho protested against such rough treatment McNamara drew a pistol and shot him, from tho effects of which wound Keller died next day. The murderer was. arrested and held lc $1,000 bond, but forfeited It when ho learned tho result of his cowardly work. Gov. Bradley offered a reward of $300 for bis capture; ministers preached about the murder and tried to ally all tho moral forces to bring the fuglilvo to justice and to fight crime generally; Judge Parker ordered a special grand jury to Indict McNamara, which It did after a noblo charge from him and Tuesday afternoon tho people gathered In mass meeting and after adopting resolutions i9 denouncing crime in genera anu ono In particular, urged that the offi- -. cers redouble their diligence to enforce the law vigorously and impartially against those who violate it. It was also resolved that every man whocould should contribute to a fund for a reward for McNamara and SG00 was raised Immediately. The meeting was composed of tho best citizens of Lexington and the earnestness of their action shows that they havo resolved to call a halt on the crimes which aro disgracing that city and making It a byword for lawlessness. Their action bodes good for Lexington and Bhows again that things may goon bad for a time, but when the limit Is reached and patlenco is exhausted, the people rise in their might and correct them. TiiBJIrtyn'nd cowardly attempt to aroiuo prejudice against senator bol by circular anonymously sent from rinrttr,nl wilt, r.fprnneu U) tho San fr.i pirilv will react in tho candi date's favor and proro a boomerang, slnco Keotucklans lovo fair play and despise a blow In tho Imck and in tho dark. If the filthy business Is In tho Interest of any candldato for governor, and It Is shown that It Is. It will, cook his gooso for good and all. Ono roport gays the Confederate veterans, of which Mr. Sanford was a member, Is responsible for the underhanded effort against tho Senator, but wo can very easily glvo tho llo to such a charge Confederate veterans may sympathUo with Sanford, but they fight only in tho open and do not rssort to tho tactics of cowards and thugs. TilKRt? aro 15 applicants for Judge disHarr's shoes and all tbo republican tricts havo not yet been heard from, l'ugh Is said to to bo tho nearest man Is to tho president of tho tho lot and ho backed by Dcboo. but ho will hardly bo appolotcd slnco ho was elected to Congress last tlrao only by tho skin Of his teeth, another election assuring a Walter democratic representative. Kvans Is hot after tho job, but Todd and Hunter will doubtless sco that ho. docs not land the prize.
