prowcr tbat the kill- Ing of Coy Goebol was not a political conspiracy entered Into by the leaders of the republican party but the work of an Irresponsible fanatic action on his own book the adduced in the trial of the assassin suspects for ball entirely removes it That Taylor was at least aware of the intention to get Goebel out of the way It In fact ho was not an Instigator of It Is also further proven Golden reasserted that bo said In discussing the subject that it was awful to think about killing men but that seemed the only course to pursue and when asked to call out the troops ho responded liMy God you fellows do something first I can got them out soon enough His own private secretary McKenzio Todd swore that Youtsey upon whom the crime seems proven beyond peradventure and Taylor had many conferences and that directly after the assassi nation Taylor and George Denny be Jan to send telegrams to various parts In the State saying Goebel has been shot and the war is on bring 200 or men as the case might be J4B Matthews exassistant secretary of State deposed that at the time ho is sued Taylors pardons to Caleb Powers and Joan Davis he also made out par dons for Charles Finley W H Culton and Harland Whlttaker He also gave convincing testimony against Youtsey and established the fact that the assassin fired from Powers once to which Youtsey had been given the key After the shot Matthews tried to get into the room but could not open the door and going in through the transom found three rifles in it with one powder stained as It just shot A window in the room was partly raised It was also proven by Capt Williamson of tho Frankfort State Guards that his company was in readiness for duty and re sponded Immediately on call after Goebel was shot and took charge of the executive building with orders to stand off the pollee thereby showing a preconcerted and minutely arranged plot Another significant fact was that the Capitol square which bud for days swarmed with mountaineers wad barren of them so as to give the assassin a clear field for his damnable work It was also shown by the production of messages by the telegraph company that not only Taylor and Denny but Stove Sharp an exdemocrat aleo sent requests for men to be sent at once and that Gen Collier had previously ar ranged with the militia officers at Lou isville and elsewhereto be in readiness as his dispatch lIaU right to them attests It was also proved that Taylor before the assassination asked for k special wire to bo run into his ofilo and requested that an operator sworn to secrecy be sent to use It Collier also bad a box put in his office saying bo would have a great deal of business showing that be knew something was going to happen It was also shown that a part of the plot was to kit Speaker Trimble and some of the democratic judges of the court of appeals while Willard Mitchell was also marked for slaughter Charles Ftnley was again shown to be one of the con spirators and so clearly as to further prove that he acted wisely In fleeing to Indiana and aecklbg the protection of a governor In sympathy with the Ken tacky republican method of getting rid of democrats who assert their rights The connection of W H Culton with the crime was shown all through the examination His attorney W R Ramsey of London made an eloquent appeal for his admission to ball but Judge Cant Uafter complimenting Mr Ramsey and expressing sympathy with Culton as he lea young man with an afflicted wife declined to grant It saying that Cultons remark to the Louisville jailer that heIIWMDt as deep in the thing as some suspected precluded ball He will remain in the Frankfort jail till September The other conspirators Caleb Powers You sey Davis Combs and Whittaker wed taken to Georgetown whero a special term has been fixed for their trials beginning July 0 TIlE Louisville Times calls attention to the fact that although the railroads entering Louisville contributed 822 000 to the Grand Army of the Republic entertainment fund In 1805 they have not so far subscribed a dollar to the Confcderatp Veterans Reunion fund this year This Is absolutely mean The G A R Is supported by pensions a great deal of the money for which is wrung from the pockets of the poor Confederates woo get nothing but what they work for The G A n needs no assistance but railroads and politicians are over ready to give it a boost The Confederates may need everything but unless It be cheerfully given and without hope of rewardthoy would spurn the contribution of the railroads or any other corporation which bootlicks the rich and Ignores the poor IN Fridays Courier Jburnal Mr Watteraon apologizes for tho levity dis played in his answer to our question why hs always adds lIand not suggestion It sets before the minds eye In living pictures the panorama of latter day democracy Ho then In so ber earnestness shows how the demo crate can win oven with Bryan but whether his advice Is takeu or not ho will say all right boys wo are a demo crat not a republican and If It is to bo a straight fight this year wo will go with you if you go to hell It Thats the kind of a democrat tobo and the kind that leaves It entirely superfluous to add and not a republican Mr Wat terson thinks that the prospect of vic tory Is sufficiently encouraging to war rant tho belief among thoughtful men that with sound judgment in laying the lines and with efficient organization wo can win The people want reform he says and will not brook revolution They seek the reform of the tax laws out of which the trusts spring grow and are fostered They seek tho re form of the laws regulating labor on lines that will Insure reciprocity of ad vantage and equal protection to the employers and the employed They seek the reduction of the chartered companies within the strictest letter of their franchise rights ITboy seek the reform of the abuses that have crept Into the administration of both the mil Mary and the civil service They seek the retention of all the territory whicl has come to us as a consequence of the Spanish war but Its disposition upon American principles upon democratic party as distinguished from republican party lines and they wouldlt they are given a fair chariceavert the threatened orgy of greed the menaced riot of rapine the certain gamble and scramble among the politicians and the speculators already foreshadowed by the proposed revival of the errs of reconstruc tion carpctbaggcry redlvlvus with all that was detestable In Louisiana In South Carolina and In Georgia brought to life again and transferred to Cuba Porto Rico and the Philippine Arch pelago To these things should the democratic leaders address their best endeavors and with the constitution in ODe hand the flag in the other a uni ted democracy can go to the country and to the world rejoicing that they are democrats and not republicans Amer- Icans all who love their country and who would save from spoliation at home at the same time that they would extend to all lands Itt noble Christianity and Its free Institutions AFTER fixing June 27 for a primary election to nominate a candidate for Congress in the 7th district the demo cratic committee adopted a resolution excluding from participation all who did not vote the straight ticket last fall Thereupon Col J R Allen ot Fayette withdrew and JUDe Gayle had announced that ho would not be a can didate If a primary election was decided upon This leaves Speaker South Trimble as the only candidate and he deserves to be elected by an over whelming vote His valiant service to the State and to his party caused the assassination crowd to mark him for slaughter but their plans failed and he will live to help make the republican party already damned and dishonored more odious ExAuDITOIt NORMAN testified that ho heard George Denny say that Goe bel would be killed and Taylor would pardon his murderer This coupled wlLh the fact that ho sent telegrams on the day of the assassination calling on his friends to come to Frankfort In largo numbers and the further fact that Taylor did try to pardon the as sassins shows that Denny any thing to do but drill and do guard duo ty Wo aro stationed on Good up Ridge 10 miles south of Manila From tboro we wero ordered to Calamba on Sanauto rlvor Wo remained thoro some hlnlr like a week and woro ro lelvcd by tbo 42nd Infantry and tho 37th was ordered to Santa Cruz onto S n cruz Lake Calamba is about 3i miles south of Manila and Santa Cruz Is about 75 miles and In the center of the Insurgents foot hold of tho south line Wo tho 37tb had never had any engagement with tho enemy until WII arrived hero but I dont think thero has been a day since now year that our regiment or somo portion of It has not been engaged A few days after wo arrived at Santa Cruz wo learned that there were qulto number of Insurgents encamped at at Marie a small town on tho lake soutb east of Santa Cruz and our battalion the third was ordered to get rcady with 200 rounds of ammunition and ono days ration Wo wont aboard tho launches that were waiting for us and we were soon on our way for the attack on St Marie In front of our c01umn of launches steamed the Lagooncr II gun boat that had aboard six Juns three 3 210 and threo 0inch guns It was our first attempt to make an a iack and It seemed that every ono was In good spirits and anxious to fire the rat gun When wo camo in eight of ha town every thing looked quiet and no appearance of warfare whatever iVo were not ablo to land with our launches so wo had about a mile of mud and water to wade Every man with his rifle 200 rounds of ammunition and his rations was making ble way to the shoro in a skirmish llno march Tho enemy had made their renchcs right along the shore The officers had discovered the treDehcs with their field glasses but couldnt sCQ auy one about them so wo continued our march and when we got In about 700 yards of the shore they opened upon us and wo returned tho fire Their first volley went way abovo our heads and wo were ordered to advance Their line seemed a mllo long or probabl longer Tho volleys came fast and tho un boat opened firo and threw ot tots from tho rear which soon quieted every thing and our march was ulckly completed Not a native could be found that was ablo to get away There wero 10 killed and several oundedund wo only had three men wounded slightly The shells tore one church down wrecked several dwell Ints and the 30th Infantry marched In- tbo next morning and is doing garrl son duty their now This was our first engagement but slnco that time wo havo had seven more etty stiff little fights The peopl there think the Fllllplnos dont want- to fight but they give us sometimes as- mucb as we want and sometimes more Company L our company were out the Hth on a scout and ran into about 200 natives They began to firo from both sides of the road and we killed 10 am iptured somo of their guns dud ammu nltlon They have some Mauser gum but the principal part we got were single and doublo barrel shotguns David V Kennedy was shot through tbo hip with a slug or largo ball of sow kind and has a dangerous wound but the doctor says bo Is getting alonj verywell Lt Miles was In command and thinks Newton Wells killed tho llllplno that shot Kennedy Wells lied one and got his gun and nola all right enough We have several time been marching along in columns of- fours and would bo fired on from the bushcs probably from 200 to 300 ould- be lined up and firo on us from places that wo couldnt make any charge on- thcm They havo all advantage of Ionly they dont have as good guns os- we have Tbo rainy season ceased hero about- the 20th of November and will com monce again about tho 20th of April and I feel confident that the 37th w1l- 1stay the full time and when the war- wIll close is unknown I think as long as there are Fllllpinos hero there wlil- bo fighting It will bo as impossible to- Jet the Fllllpinos to live under American laws as It wits the Indian for tbey- are all tbo same race of people Their relljtlon is Catholic but It la different from the Catholic of America and Rny- ono can see that they are determined Our commanding oUicer told the people of Santa Cruz to go ahead and make their laws and tho U S boys would prolect them from the insurgents or- any coming enemy and they told him- they didnt want American protection tbat their feelings wero with tho Insurgents while they had not raised arms- nUl they favored the Insurgents And when peace and harmony reigns here It will be when there Is no Fllltplno no American for they both cant live In harmony togetherW F MARTIN 37th U S V Co L P I P SSinco I commenced I have secure n photograph of tho
