on the cost of National campaigns says that the whole expense of Lincoln first nomination was less than liOO and that only the sum of 100000 was spent to secure his reelection In 1804 The campaign funds however have contln ually Increased In size until It Is estimated that this year It will exceed 5000000 While the republicans be Ian their career on economical basis In this particular they long since depart ed from It and to them Is due the pres ent disgraceful state of affairs It was only by means of their vicious class legislation that mushroom fortunes could be amassed and to preserve these laws those benellted by them have al ways responded liberally to the de mands of the campaign collectors The growth of the evils under these laws have increased in proportion with thet campaign funds The Iniquities of the protective tariff seemed to be as great a burden as could be bourne but these in comparison with the trusts are as the little linger to the thigh Instead of endeavoring to relieve the people from these oppressions the republicans have exerted themselves to keep them up The public funds have been wasted in a shameful manner to keep down a sur plus and keep up a tariff Costly pub lie buildings have been erected at every crossroads In the United States and every man pensioned who joined the Federal army and many of those who thought of doing so but changed their inlnds They have at last discovered the means of keeping down a surplus which Is to engage In an eternal war of conquest The people have all along endeavored to rid themselves of these oppressions and the greater their ef corruptto vote i jTheeffort to throttle the trusts Is a lite and death struggle Realizing this the republicans have determined to save them if money can do It consequently their campaign fund has grown to an enormous size IN response to a portion of one of Beckhama speeches which was offen sive to him W J Stone Is rushing In to republican papers with cards which he says the democratic papers refuse to publish renewing the allegation that ho will not support Beckbam be cause he Is a beheQulary of the Music Hall convention Mr Stone of all men should keep quiet on that subject for according to his own statement he Is as deep In the mud as he would have us believe that Mr Goebel was In lobe mire His complaint Is in substance that In a single handed tight liar din would have won the nomination but that he and Goebel wrongfully comolned and conspired together to thwart the will of the majority Mr Stone should thank the democratic pa pers for refusing to permit him to make an ass of himself In their columns TUB republicans are trying to oun teract the effect of the excellent im pression made by Bryan in new New York by charging tbat ho will bo in lluenced by Richard Croker if elected This In the chaste language of Gov Bradley is an unmitigated lie but If It were true the people would never theless prefer a president who could be inrtueneed by Croker to one absolutely controlled by Mark Hanna JUDGE GKORUE GRAY of Maryland a republican who was appointed to a place on the FeJeral bench by McKinley will vote for Bryan because be does not desire to see
