on the cost of National campaigns says that the whole expense of Lincoln first nomination was less than liOO and that only the sum of 100000 was spent to secure his reelection In 1804 The campaign funds however have contln ually Increased In size until It Is estimated that this year It will exceed 5000000 While the republicans be Ian their career on economical basis In this particular they long since depart ed from It and to them Is due the pres ent disgraceful state of affairs It was only by means of their vicious class legislation that mushroom fortunes could be amassed and to preserve these laws those benellted by them have al ways responded liberally to the de mands of the campaign collectors The growth of the evils under these laws have increased in proportion with thet campaign funds The Iniquities of the protective tariff seemed to be as great a burden as could be bourne but these in comparison with the trusts are as the little linger to the thigh Instead of endeavoring to relieve the people from these oppressions the republicans have exerted themselves to keep them up The public funds have been wasted in a shameful manner to keep down a sur plus and keep up a tariff Costly pub lie buildings have been erected at every crossroads In the United States and every man pensioned who joined the Federal army and many of those who thought of doing so but changed their inlnds They have at last discovered the means of keeping down a surplus which Is to engage In an eternal war of conquest The people have all along endeavored to rid themselves of these oppressions and the greater their ef corruptto vote i jTheeffort to throttle the trusts Is a lite and death struggle Realizing this the republicans have determined to save them if money can do It consequently their campaign fund has grown to an enormous size IN response to a portion of one of Beckhama speeches which was offen sive to him W J Stone Is rushing In to republican papers with cards which he says the democratic papers refuse to publish renewing the allegation that ho will not support Beckbam be cause he Is a beheQulary of the Music Hall convention Mr Stone of all men should keep quiet on that subject for according to his own statement he Is as deep In the mud as he would have us believe that Mr Goebel was In lobe mire His complaint Is in substance that In a single handed tight liar din would have won the nomination but that he and Goebel wrongfully comolned and conspired together to thwart the will of the majority Mr Stone should thank the democratic pa pers for refusing to permit him to make an ass of himself In their columns TUB republicans are trying to oun teract the effect of the excellent im pression made by Bryan in new New York by charging tbat ho will bo in lluenced by Richard Croker if elected This In the chaste language of Gov Bradley is an unmitigated lie but If It were true the people would never theless prefer a president who could be inrtueneed by Croker to one absolutely controlled by Mark Hanna JUDGE GKORUE GRAY of Maryland a republican who was appointed to a place on the FeJeral bench by McKinley will vote for Bryan because be does not desire to see the foundation knocked from under the government It Is refreshing in those degenerate times to hear of a man who will not sell his vote for an olllce SKNATOU CHAUNCKV M DBIKW Is very much disappointed with Bryans speeches In New York and it would have been a great surprise to us all had ho not been for in addition to being a hidebound republican It has long been his opinion that the only man In the country capable of making a great speech U Cbtuncey M Depew Til K campaign pictures of Mr Yer kes have bloodred background This Is very suggestive ot ono of Taylors acts all of which be has endorsed Tin recent rolling of W J Stone show that he fully realizes that there Is no more democratic moss for him to gather Tim boast Is openly made by r pul llcuns from the mountains that In ease Mr Yerke Is elected governor him tlrst net will bu to pardon Caleb Pow ors and should Secretary Hill resign rather than sign the pardon Powers will be Immediately appointed Sccre tary of State by Yerkes Do the good people of the State like the probablll tyof such acts If not they can express their disapproval at the polls next Tuesday week by voting for Gov Beckham against whom no breath of suspicion of wrongdoing has ever attached and who Is Incapable of a wrong act A vote for him will be a vote for the maintenance of law and the reestablishment of order throughout the State It will be a vote to make assassins and assassination odious and a vote to restore the State to the plane It had before the republicans brought shame and disgrace upon It Vote for Heck ham law and order justice and prosperity TilE Chicago Chronicle strikes center when It says that until Taylor shall have been tried and convicted or ac quitted the Goebel tragedy will remain a reproach to the States of Kentucky and Indiana alike The hanging of a hundred minor conspirators will be no vindication of the outraged law so long as the man who Is charged with being the master spirit of the murderous plot bids defiance to justice and Is protected- In his defiance by Gov Mount In violation of the Federal constitution Mount may persist In his refusal to surrender Taylor and ho mar perchance escape punishment but he will always be a pariah and the man who protects him can not escape the infamy which that protection carries with It Kentucklani should show their condemnation of the protected and tbu protector by voting against the proxy of the man who confesses guilt by Bight and shows his raven nature by every act of a devious life AFTER Inducing Mr Sherman to resign his seatin the Senate to accept the otllce of secretary of State In order that Hanna might get his place and then practically kicking him out of the cabinet President McKlnleys procla nation reciting his many virtues and expressing hU and the countrys sorrow over his demise Is about as hypocritical a document as an errant hypocrite could Indite It U almost like adding Insult to Injury IN a recent flight of oratory Hanna expressed the opinion that Bryan was not tit to be constable This Is about the only time he has told the truth since he mounted the raging stump for Bryan Is In no wise fitted for that oltlon hut Hanna himself would make a model constable his ability for collecting money especially fitting him for that job But this Is about the only office that be Is capable of flll log satisfactorily JUDCSE GANTKILL Is as good a judge of human nature as he Is of law Be was convinced that YouUey was shamming and his diagnosis has proven correct laving escaped the gallows that ho saw looming up
