Mr Dink Farmer relative to the announcement of my candidacy for the next democratic nomination for jailer of Lincoln county At the time of that announcement It was not my purpose to cumber the col umns of a newspaper with the contra versies that might arise between pres enL and past dissatisfied candidates and myself nor would I Indulge In that dls tasteful practice now but for the necessity Imposed upon me by Mr Fare mer I realize thifc the duties of my office will not permit mo to answer his complaints otherwise than bv the means that I now employ It will doubt lees be remembered that on March 10 IDOl the democrats of Lincoln held n primary election to nomldate candl dates for the various county offices At that election I asked to bo made the democaatlo nominee for tbo office of jailor and when the ballots were count od It was found that you bad by a ma Jority of nine votes conferred upon me honor that I sought Mr Farmer as Is evident from his recent statements was greatly die pleated with the results About two mouths after tbo primary election he approached mo on the streets of Stan ford and asked mo to sign a written agreement never to run against him self or any of his sons Tbls I positively refused to do In the course of a few weeks if I remember correctly I was again approached by two democrats of this county who urged me to accedo to Mr Farmers demand With great re luctauce I finally for tbo sake of party harmony agreed not to run again for the office of jailer upon condition that Mr Farmer rldo through the county with me and stop the report then cur rent that be claimed to be the regular nomineeNothing more was said upon this subject by either party until the ballot boxes were opened Then It was that Mr Farmers wrath broke out afresh I was Informed by one of the gentlemen who bad asked mo to make the agreement now In controversy that be would bean Independent candidate for jailer On the same day I believe I was told by the same gentleman that Mr Farmer had threatened to kill mo if I spoke to him I saw no more of him until while prosecuting my cam palgn I called at his house and asked him to Introduce me to his neighbors to whom 1 was a stranger In a most discourteous manner he refused to do It These are the facts which Mr Farm er Is pleased to call an agreement and If In their light there be a democrat who disapproves of my candidacy and is unwilling to endorse my conduct In office I shall make no complaint Whatever may be the opinion of Mr Farmer as to the propriety of my run ning I intend to be In tbo race to tbo finish I may further say that while I consider my defeat a possibility al most too remote to bo considered yet If my candidacy shall result In that event I shall not bo found among the grumblers or renegades In the future as In the past my bal lot and my service however humble they mhy be belong to the democratic party If on the other hand I am nominated as 1 confidently expect to be it shall be my purpose to give the party no cause to regret its selection ISAAC HERKIN LAND STOCK O ETC O P Huffman bought of R L Port cr six butcher cattle at 3jo In Mason E R Davie of Helena paid Charles harem
