from North Carolina One of the men was very large of stature UK countenance was bold fe I rooloui and exceedingly repulsive Oil limbs were Rlifaotlc bony and muscular and bit whole appearance revealed nothing but villainy and cruelty His hair was very thick coarse end of a fiery red Oo wore no hat and bli few clothe wero filthy and ragged Oe carried a rUle In bis bands and a knife and tomahawk In a broad leather belt fattened around his waist He was the leaderThe other Harpe was tbeoouuterpart of his brother In appearance except that he was very small of stature Two of the women IVg Harps wives were coarse dirty anti of an ex Jccedlngly shabby appearance while the other the wife of Little arpo was equally shabby but was fttfctiral and educated Tbey remained at their camp on the Wltferness road two days and nights spending the time In drinking and de 01 I bimhery When they left this place they took tbo road leading to Green river and tho day after their departure a wealthy y6ung man from Virginia was robbed and murdered In the Wilderness road which runs through Itockoaitle Hill The Harpos were at once suspected and a party of armed men went In pur A suit of them After encountering many difficulties on thy way they came upon tbem while oneamped In a bottom of Ureen river Casey county and forced them to surrender They were taken back to Stanford The evidence against aap Not long after this they were beard of In Atialn county near the town of Columbia where they murdered a f obit This little fellow was walking quietly along the road carrying a pillowcase fun of In the guise of Methodist preachers and r sought lodging nl Slagalls house Mrs Stagall ber babyand a lodger were the only oooupants besides the preachers that night Tbo bet room was given to the preachers and every attention possible was shown them ID the dead of night the Uarpes crept down stairs after murdering the lodg er and brained Mrs Stagall and the baby They then sot fire to the house t and lift They came across two men who had camped a short distance from the Sta gall house These men were returning from Robinson Lick where they also had been for salt The Qarpes caught these two men and told them they wore under arrest for arson They shot one of them and tbo other broke loose and t ran Qc was soon overtaken and kill edStagall returned homo that day and was almost overcome with grief and outrage at the loss of his home and fam llv Ho secured the services of Capl Looper who was a powerful and fear less man They collected four stalwart I men and started on the search for vengeance + When they arrived at the camp they found only the women there who up on seeing the armed men warned the flames who had gone Into the woods to kill a traveler The outlaws mount ed ther horses and rodo off In different directions Leeper singled out Dig Harpo and followed him with Stallallwhoao horse was not so fleet la the rear Llttlo t Harpo succeeded in making good his escape After chasing Dig Harpa about nine miles Leaper camo within gunshot and fired The ball paencd through the outlaws thigh and entered the home tt ho was riding which foil dead As the i horse full Big darpoa gun was wrench s ed from his hand and the horao pinned him to the ground Leaper ran up to whore the outlaw was lying and found that one leg was broken by iho bullet and the other crushed by the dead the Stagall mur der and planed In Jill at Ilusjellvllle as accomplices They were tried and acquitted Stagall and a party of fol lonTeri Intended to murder the women after they were acquitted but Judge Ormsby ordered the women back to Jail Toe sheriff locked them up but knowing that they would not bo safe from the mob took them out secretly alter dark and hid them In a sink hole The next night be removed them five miles from Itussellvllle to acave where bo kept them supplied with food until Stagall and party left Then the wom en made their escape The women told tbo sheriff that their husbands were once arrested at Knoxvllle and put In Jail lor a crime they did not commit After their release they vowed vengenqa against all mankind and said they woulU rob and murder aotll they wore killed The wife of Little Harpe who cams I of a good family afterward married a respeolable man of Mississippi end they reared a large family all of whom were noted for their honesty sobriety and Industry
