Volume hi Richmond Number 50 to connect with the south bound train on the C S R R at Danville Junction I went on to Editorial Correspondence Ky Sept 1 1880 On the morning of the 23il of August took the east bound train for Midway from which place I was soon carried to VKUSAtrtKS distant from the railroad about 1 miles It was County Court day and the town was Everybody literally packed with people Large was busy and in a good humor and feeding cattle were on numbers of fat the market and auctioneers had all they could do 1 learn that Versailles has a population of 2000 and judge from appearances that they are a live people There are some evidences of thrift here and I have no doubt but that it is a pleasant little place I remained here but a short time going back to v long ago begun to tell on it Mr Kinnaird cashier of the First National Bank here who by the way is an exceedingly agreeable gentleman has a very fine banking build- ¬ ing and is doing all the business he can well attend to Other business men seem to be doing moderately well A very creditable court house adorns the public square but the church buildings reflect no credit on the town They are small and few and quite ancient in appearance I had the pleasure of meeting here Mrs Eugenia Dunlan Potts Kentucky b poetess of whom Kentucky may well be proud h Remaining here but a few hours ceeded to OAMlIltiMSVIMti R R twenty miles south of RICHMOND Lebanon It is a little town 700 inhabi- ¬ I rather expected to see a pretty place tants but does a large business It is the on my arrival here but was wholly unpre shipping point for four or five counties pared for the beauty and elegance ami on the C 0 ¬ 1 was the next place TANFOKD 1 visited 1 was most V V I agreeably disappointed in this place had expected to find a companion town to Lancaster but the spirit of progress and here enterprise is everywhere visible The town has a population of 1300 and it OltKHNSllUKO MIDWAY the county seat of Green county and the is still growing The court house is a very on the afternoon stage The people here nice building near which has recently been present southern terminus of the C it O 1000 in number claim that their prospects erected a 12000 jail The county has bought R R was the next place I visited This Some a block of buildings near the court house is one of the oldest towns in the State in for growth and prosperity are good recently been erected and had them torn down so as to enlarge fact as in appearance Comparatively nice buildings have little business is done here All the roads and more are in contemplation and beautify the court house yard here The There is u stage line from here to Versailles members of the Christian Church at this leading into the place are terribly bad two I should have said for there is lively place are erecting an elegant church build- - and the tide of trade that properly belongs competition making two round trips daily four or five large brick stores are be here is carried to Campbellsville over good Sunday excepted between these points ing built two or three more business turnpikes This county also has its troubles about Mr W G Chelf the gentleman who runs houses a large livery stable and several a stage line from Frankfort to Harroris elegant residences will be commenced railroad taxes and in consequence it is burg carries the mail and Adams Express shortly and the young men of the town without a sheriff as well as Taylor county lie has a nice new stage have formed a stock company and now The people are industrious frugal and over tins line Society here is coach accommodating employes and has have in process of erection a 0000 town moderately prosperous said to be far above the average indeed fare to the small sum of twenty hall reduced the How is that for public spirit With this reJive cents for each way There is a large and prosperous female the society of Greensburg is the greatest duction in fare the travel has greatly college here the buildings and grounds boast of its people The town has a popu lation of 60O nearly half of whom are of increased A large of which are very handsome After spending the afternoon here I took majority of the residences are tasteful and the colored persuasion In company with Mr Buckner Taylor the evening train for Lexington changed eosth Many beautiful cottages ami flower to whom I hereby return my thanks for Cincinnati Southern Crossing where yards ornament the town oars at Here perhaps I met Ed Grant formerly of Frankfort is the only place in the State where may his kindness to me 1 went to COMJMMA who is fireman on the C S R R At his be found a female oflice holder except the on Sunday and spent the day I found solicitation I got aboard the locomotive and State Librarian The Deputy County Ed Clerk is a lady had a delightful ride to Nicliolusville She holds the ollice by one of the prettiest and most prosperous lie is virtue of a special act of the Legislature little inland towns I have yet seen There is working hard and doini well much pleased with his situation Thanking Mr Wallaco Varnon for his are two large female colleges here many Airiviug at Nicholnsville 1 found it im- kiudnes to me during my stay here 1 beautiful homes and many good sociable people The last census gives this town possible to procure a room in the town and leave Stanford for 045 inhabitants only three of whom are so had to sleep on a cot so called in the SlWNMWM There is not an inch of ground On Tuesday the county seat of Washington county colored parlor of the Veranda Hotel in Columbia owned by colored people nor morning 1 went to the tourt houe where which I reach by means of a stage from j saw las 11 Arnold the murderer ot Lebanon a pleasant drive of nine mile is there a colored church iu the town I hail the pleasure of meeting Dr B T Robt E Little his wife the widuw of the The late census gives Springfield a popu Wood formerly Assistant Surgeon in charge murdered man Mrs Robt IS Little and lation of 700 A good country surrounds Hiiuh an array ol legal talent as is seldom the town and a very fair business is done at the Feeble minded Institute who has witnessed in thu same house at the same here There is a good court house here permanently located here for the purpose I spent the forenoon here after five or six nice business houses anil two or of practicing his profession I am told time Leaving that his prospects for soon obtaining a three very flue dwelling houses which I Itll fur ¬ ¬ near here Several houses are being built here and several more will be commenced Taylor county of which this is shortly the county sent is and has been for two years without a sheriff There is some trouble about the collection of the railroad taxes in this county and it being considered a dangerous undertaking no person can be found who wants the office of sheriff There is no small amount of enterprise here and Campbellsville is in a very fair way of being a good sized town before many years shall have passed business prosperity that characterizes it I have never seen a town in Kentucky that will bear comparison with this place It has a population of 3000 but looks and uehaves like a town ten times its size Its business houses are large and imposing in appearance and its residences are elegant tasteful and costly Business flourishes here and everybody seems to be in a pros- ¬ perous condition Evidences of wealth and culture and refinement meet the eve at every turn and a visitor to this place feels that surely this is Gods own favored country I had the pleasure of meeting Gov Mc- Creary here to whom I am indebted and hereby return thanks for courtesies shown me by him No truer nor more obliging gentleman than he can be found in this broad Commonwealth Long may he live and prosper I also had the pleasure of meeting lion Curtis F Biirnham with whom I spent a part of a most pleasant evening in his own elegant home He is another of natures noblemen with whom 1 am proud to have met 1 could say much in Draise of Richmond and the country surrounding it but this leuer is aireauv too long and so
